Lighten the Load To Be More Productive

By Amy West

“You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.” ~C.S. Lewis

Have you ever felt like you’re carrying an invisible backpack full of emotional bricks? Guilt, worry, perfectionism, resentment — they all weigh down your energy and make productivity feel like wading through molasses. The truth is, emotional clutter can be just as draining as physical clutter. When we lighten our emotional load, we create space for focus, clarity, and momentum.

Name It to Tame It

A powerful technique to reduce emotional weight is simply naming what you’re feeling. This mindfulness-based approach, often referred to as “Name it to tame it,” helps regulate emotions by shifting them from the reactive part of the brain to the rational. Take a few minutes each morning to write down what’s emotionally weighing on you. Acknowledge it without judgment. This simple act can significantly reduce stress and create the mental space necessary to accomplish tasks.

For example, if you’re feeling overwhelmed because of a tough conversation you’ve been avoiding, writing it down — “I’m anxious about the feedback I have to give my colleague” — helps you face the emotion instead of subconsciously carrying it around all day.

Letting go doesn’t mean ignoring emotions — it means processing them so they no longer hijack your energy. Lightening your emotional load doesn’t just boost productivity; it enhances your sense of freedom and joy.

Try it this week: identify one emotional burden, write about it, and take a small action toward resolution. You might be surprised how much lighter and more energetic you feel.

Stretching alongside you,

Amy
