Move From Reacting to Creating

By Amy West

“When you own the choice, you own the outcome. That’s when you move from reacting to creating.”~Steve Chandler, author and coach

Did you know that ‘reacting’ and ‘creating’ are made from the same letters?

It’s not just a fun word fact but a powerful reminder. When life throws us curveballs, our first instinct is often to react: to tense up, shut down, push back, or try to fix things quickly. But reaction comes from the outside in. It’s often fueled by fear, habit, or urgency.

Creating, on the other hand, comes from the inside out. It’s grounded, intentional, and imaginative. Creating allows us to shape our response rather than be shaped by our circumstances.

In the world of performing, this difference is everything. When we react—whether to a tough rehearsal, critical feedback, or internal doubt—we often get stuck. But when we pause and create, we open space for growth, artistry, and presence.

Move from Reacting to Creating in Four Steps

Next time you feel triggered or stressed, try this:

  1. Stop and notice – “I’m reacting right now.”

  2. Pause – Breathe deeply.

  3. Ask – “What do I want to create in this moment?”
    (Calm? Clarity? Curiosity?)

  4. Act – Choose the next step that reflects your intention, not your reaction.

This week, practice catching yourself in small reactive moments and use them as invitations to create instead—create space, possibility, and grounded presence.

Because the same energy that fuels reaction can also fuel art, connection, and transformation—if we pause long enough to rearrange it.

Stretching alongside you,

Amy
