“Each friend represents a world in us, a world of possibility not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born.” ~ Anaïs Nin, writer
A few days ago, I was reminded just how essential friendship is to our well-being.
Over winter break, I was deeply focused on preparing for the upcoming semester. Much of my time and energy went into planning, organizing, and preparing, especially as I worked on designing a new course. That process is exciting and creatively fulfilling, and it also requires sustained focus and attention. Without fully realizing it, many of my days were oriented toward responsibility, with little space left for much else.
Last weekend, I attended a work-in-progress rehearsal, and I saw the familiar face of my dear friend and colleague. I had no idea she would be there.
During the breaks in the rehearsal, my friend and I were able to sit together and chat. We caught up on life, shared stories, laughed, and simply spent time in one another’s presence. Nothing elaborate, just under two hours together. I felt myself relax a bit and…
It fed my soul.
That time together made something clear. No matter how meaningful our work is, we are not meant to do life without tending to our relationships. Friends hold us in ways that schedules and accomplishments cannot. They remind us who we are beyond our roles. They ground us, energize us, and support our health and well-being.
This experience was a gentle but powerful reminder for me to remember to take time to connect. To reach out and allow space for friendship even in the busiest seasons. These moments are not extras. They are essential.
This week, I invite you to reflect on where connection fits into your life right now. Is there a friend you have been missing or a conversation you have been meaning to have? At the very least, send a text or pick up the phone and give them a call.
Sometimes, the most supportive thing we can do for ourselves is to make time for the people who know and love us best.
Stretching alongside you,
Amy
