The Power of Reciprocity

By Amy West

“Love is never wasted, for its value does not rest upon reciprocity. ~ C.S. Lewis

Have you ever noticed how good it feels to help someone, really help them, without expecting anything in return? And how often does that kindness seem to circle back to you unexpectedly?

According to Oxford Languages, reciprocity is “the practice of exchanging things with others for mutual benefit.”

But reciprocity is more than just an exchange, it’s a rhythm, a relationship, a quiet agreement that we’re in this life together, offering what we can, receiving when we need

You likely practice this more than you realize.

When you listen deeply to a friend, show up for a colleague, or offer support just because it’s needed, you’re engaging in this powerful exchange. And in turn, others do the same for you, sometimes without you even noticing.

Still, giving and receiving don’t always feel the same. For many, it’s easier to give—to be the helper, the caretaker, the strong one.

Receiving can feel vulnerable and, for some, weak.

Receiving asks us to trust, to soften, to allow support in. But just like breath…inhale and exhale…we need both. You are worthy of receiving care, just as much as you are capable of offering it.

Think of a seed: it doesn’t grow on its own. It needs soil, water, and sunlight, each offering something important. Only when all are present does the seed thrive. You, too, are like that seed. You grow when you are supported, nourished, and seen. And you help others grow when you offer those things in return.

This week’s practice:
Notice one moment each day when you either give or receive your time, kindness, presence, or support. Pause. Let it land. No need to fix or change anything. Just witness the exchange.

Reciprocity may not always be equal, but when it’s rooted in care and openness, it comes full circle and gives back ways we could never expect.

Stretching alongside you,
Amy
