The Wisdom of Stillness

By Amy West

“Within you, there is a stillness and a sanctuary to which you can retreat at any time and be yourself.” ~ Hermann Hesse, poet and novelist

Sometimes growth feels like movement, momentum, and visible progress. Other times, it feels like stillness; like waiting, resting, or even disappointment. It can be tempting to believe that if we are not charging forward, we are falling behind.

But stillness has its own rhythm and its own gifts.

Disappointment often arises when life doesn’t unfold the way we hoped. Our ego wants quick answers, recognition, or a straight path to success. Yet, within those moments of pause and frustration lies an opportunity: to see beyond the narrow lens of ego and into the deeper landscape of who we are becoming.

Like a seed beneath the soil, invisible work is happening even when it appears that nothing is changing. Roots are extending, strengthening, and preparing to support what will eventually grow above the surface. In the same way, your periods of stillness are not wasted; they are the quiet ground where resilience, clarity, and courage take root.

When you notice disappointment, try asking yourself: What can this teach me if I step outside my ego’s need for control? Instead of rushing to fix or push forward, sit with the pause. Breathe. Trust that this season of stillness holds lessons you may not yet see.

Practice: This week, when you feel still or stuck, pause and place a hand on your heart. Ask yourself: What roots are quietly strengthening in me right now? Journal what comes up, even if it feels incomplete. With time, you may find that what once felt like nothing was, in fact, the groundwork for something greater.

Stretching alongside you,

Amy
