What Do I Eat? That Depends (Part 2)

Building a Balanced Plate
“The food you eat can be either the safest and most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison.” ~ Ann Wigmore, whole health practitioner

Becoming aware of and practicing more mindful eating by slowing down and focusing solely on eating without distractions. The next step is learning how to nourish your body. Many people ask, “What’s the best diet?” The truth is, there isn’t one eating plan that’s perfect for everyone. Your needs depend on your age, activity level, health goals, medical conditions, culture, and personal preferences.

Instead of chasing the latest nutrition trend, focus on building a balanced plate.

Start with protein, which supports muscle health, keeps you feeling satisfied, and helps stabilize blood sugar. Aim to include a quality protein source at each meal, such as chicken, fish, eggs, Greek yogurt, beans, lentils, tofu, or cottage cheese.

Next, fill half your plate with plants. Vegetables and fruits provide vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants that support everything from digestion to immune health. The more colorful your plate, the wider variety of nutrients you’ll receive.

Don’t fear carbohydrates. They are your body’s preferred source of energy, especially for your brain and active muscles. Choose carbohydrates that are as close to their natural form as possible, including oats, brown rice, quinoa, sweet potatoes, fruit, and beans. These provide lasting energy and valuable fiber.

Finally, include healthy fats, which are essential for hormone production, brain health, and absorbing certain vitamins. Foods like avocados, nuts, seeds, olive oil, and fatty fish provide nourishing fats that also help meals feel satisfying.

Remember, asking yourself how you can make your next meal just a little better is a goal worth striving for. Every meal doesn’t have to be perfect, and no single food determines your health. Over time, consistently choosing meals that include protein, plants, quality carbohydrates, and healthy fats will give your body the nutrients it needs to thrive.

Stretching alongside you,

Amy
